Education -- a Harvest-full

Isabelle diligently shucking the corn and peeling away the hairs. We're freezing our corn this year.

Snack time during a break -- Isabelle and Isaac sat on the fence to eat some ripening grapes.

The boys picking green beans (again!!)

Lunch time under the weeping willow. The menu (created and put together by Josiah) = cheese (dairy and protein group), potato chips (vegetable group), and banana/cream-cheese/chocolate chip bread (grain, fat, and "fruit" group). Smile. At least he's **thinking** about nutrition!

Today my children happily traded Algebra I and diagramming sentences for the education that comes from living on a little "farm" of sorts. Harvest is heavily upon us and on days when I feel the weight of making use of everything we've worked so hard to grow, I find that these are the days to put the books away and learn other valuable lessons of life and character.
And so today at breakfast we made the list:
Harvest corn, shuck, and freeze (mommy and Isabelle)
Harvest zucchini, grate, and freeze (boys)
Harvest red potatoes, remove dirt, put in bags awaiting the root cellar to be finished (boys and mom)
Harvest pickle cucumbers awaiting their moment to become dill pickles (mom)
Harvest tomatoes, onions, and herbs -- make homemade spaghetti sauce for the year (mom)
Harvest green beans, bag, and refrigerate (boys and Isabelle)
Cut down sick raspberry stalks, remove and burn (boys)
Wow! There's no way, without the help of my small crew, that I could accomplish all of this on my own. But today they worked hard along side me and we were able to complete it all!
Thanks kids!!
