Making Syrup

We've read some wonderful books over the past few years which feature the logistics of making maple syrup; thus, when Isabelle saw the sap dripping from the freshly pruned cuts on our grape vines, she decided to gather it to make her own syrup. She rigged up a "gathering pan" to catch the drips and each morning dumps it into our measuring cup (as you can see, she's up to 3/4 of a cup now!). This afternoon this is where I found her -- preparing her makeshift fire with longing eyes and a squeaky voice asking, "Do you think this is enough to boil down into some syrup??"
I love her ingenuity and her true farmer's heart! Perhaps someday she'll live in Vermont and I'll come each late winter to help with "sugaring time" . . .
