The Latest Kronz Passion

My sons have a new passion -- namely that of Shudokan karate. They've enjoyed both private and class lessons for about 3 months now at a local dojo with a Christian "Sensei". God is so good. This has been an excellent opportunity for them to build mental and physical skill, as well as to build relationships and exercise diligence in an area otherwise foreign to them.

Last night, the boys (along with Uncle Jason and cousins - Ethan and Aidan) tested and celebrated the moving up from a beginner's white belt to their next respective belt levels.
The test involved demonstrating, along with the entire student body of the Nampa School of Karate, their proficiency in a number of exercises. It was exciting to watch students of all ages and levels work toward their goal of a higher belt level.

Josiah, being over age 13, is considered an adult in his karate school. Isaac, however, is still considered a youth. As such, typically the youth only advance a half belt level per testing period. However, Isaac's Sensei (Ben) has been heavily evaluating him for his skill level, dedication, and focus as well as his underlying character. After nearly 17 years of teaching, his Sensei honored him uniquely by promoting him to full yellow belt status today, in spite of his age. Isaac was BEAMING.

Although the many moves in karate seem to come easy to Josiah, it is Isaac who seems to have the deep and sincere passion for these skills. I will often find him practicing his Kada, stretching, or doing other exercises he has learned in the previous months without any initiation from me. The teaching at the Nampa School of Karate goes beyond just physical skill. The teachers try to help the students focus on their whole selves -- stressing the Biblical character traits of respect for authority, diligence and excellence in all that they do, and consideration of others. The boys have truly taken this to heart and it is showing in their outward behaviors and attitudes throughout the day. We're very proud of their courage and determination in this new area of fun and learning; and we're excited to see where God leads them in this area! Congratulations yellow belts :)
